KCEA Statement on the KCS Budget Proposal

PRESS RELEASE
April 25, 2012

There have been many questions regarding KCEA’s support of the $35 million school budget increase, proposed by Dr. McIntyre and the Knox County Board of Education. In response, KCEA has issued the following statement:

“As educators, we do not oppose increasing funding for public schools. However, we cannot unilaterally support the budget in its current form, for the following reasons:

· Money was appropriated by the State Legislature, with the intent of giving educators an across-the-board salary increase, yet the current budget redistributes that money, leaving certified personnel without a local raise –for the fourth year in a row.

· The budget continues to give no raises to our Education Support Professionals, for the fourth year in a row

· The Knox County Education Association had no input into this budget process

· The budget provides large increases in technology, without evidence that there will be adequate staff to support these initiatives”

Therefore, the Knox County Education Association neither supports nor opposes this budget.

KCEA Elections are online this year. In order to have a good voter turnout and to adhere to the election rules and guidelines in place, please read the following important information very carefully:

Voting period is Monday, March 26 -Sunday, April 1 @ 11:59 pm . Since this is controlled electronically through TEA, there are no exceptions. Once the window closes, there can be no additional votes cast.

PASSWORD: Your individual ID membership number*

*Your membership number is a 7 digit number (excluding zeros) that can be found on your TEA Access card, on the back of your personal copy of the TEACH magazine, or your building representative can provide you with your number from the roster. If you cannot locate your number OR if you have trouble logging in and you’ve contacted your building rep first, please call the KCEA office and we can help you.
